The popular misconception is that I don't eat. Or I eat salad. The first is not true, the second is often true. Mostly, I hold to the policy not to eat rubbish calories that come in the form of carbs that taste blah (or have no taste whatsoever). Playing the cello makes me hungry, so I try to avoid playing before I eat. However for times like today, where dinner comes after rehearsal, my calorie counting fails for lack of willpower. I tend to stick to the same food for every place I go, so here's a list of what I eat at certain places.
Favourite (quartet) haunt Ichiban Boshi:
1. unagi/softshellcrab/salmon avocado handroll - they have nice seaweed here. If it's crunchy enough I eat the whole thing, if it's not, I peel the handroll apart, remove the rice, and eat the rest.
2. Crispy lobster salad roll - It has wasabi, mayo, and is fried. Also known as the ultimate indulgence.
But nothing can beat
3. the Hotate Enoki cheese thingy. Eat this if you have 1000 calories to spend. For example, after you've finished running a marathon.
4. Sashimi salad - what I normally eat, 3 out of 5 visits. It beats the one at Waraku because the whole thing is salmon sashimi. The Waraku one has strips of a mix of sashimi, which is not as nice. The Sushi Tei one looks like a mass of massacred fish. The sashimi is blobs of wobbly flesh.
Favourite (quartet) haunt no. 2. Coffee Club
1. Wasabi prawn salad - I've officially overdosed on it. It definitely beats the one at the tea party, although it costs about $4 more. It has tempeh - how much more ethnically competent can a dish get?
2. Coffee Club Burger with mushrooms - I eat half/one piece of the bread, de-skin the wedges, eat all of the salad, and eat the burger layer by layer because it is the best way not to appear too caveman-like. Also, the wagyu beef burger at Bistro Gaga@OldSchool is awesome. The steak burger at Tuckshop is not bad, but a bit smaller than the Coffee Club one, and without sides.
3. Garlic prawn pasta - (prawn again) Not bad, despite the carbs. It has tons of garlic, vampire slayer-worthy amounts. The one at Changing Appetites is lighter, less oily, and has the prawns with other stuff on kebabs which is cool too. The one at the tea party is...non existent. I recently discovered that I could convert their prawn and mushroom carbonara to prawn and mushroom aglio olio, which is totally hot, because there are less calories. But if I need a pasta quickie, mien@bukit timah market is awesome.
Hmm. I realised classifying it according to food places isn't really working. Let's try this by food type.
Fish and Chips
Skipping fish and co, Botak Jones is not bad - their portions are enough for two. One outlet just opened opposite my block and it's been drawing endless queues. For Parmesan fish and chips, Manhattan Fish Market and Changing Appetites aren't too bad. Recently went to Hooked On Fish@ Rail Mall and decided that they have nice fish - a bit pricey but they don't have service charge.
This is bad. I suddenly have dessert cravings.
Fresh fruit fondue - Coffee club or Max Brenners. Skip the Haagen Daz one it's not worth the calories.
Ice cream - Azabu Sabo's black sesame/greentea/azuki/dark chocolate/rum and raisin. Island Creamery - my cello loves the Tiger Sorbet, Pear Sake, Kahlua Latte, Rum and Raisin. (what's with the alcohol?) Ben and Jerry's - Dublin Mudslide, Chubby Hubby, New York Superfudge Chunk.
Chocolate XX - Mud Ooze@ Miss Clarity's Cafe, Chocolate Fondant - Bistro Gaga and Coffee Club. 2 am's chocolate tart is ok. I think their ice cream is nicer though.
See, I do eat.
