titans

Blogs are born out of necessity - to rant, to bitch or just, to process, externalise, articulate.
Now that I have nothing in particular to get of my chest, in other words, not a very happening life, I have not much to blog about either. But that is just what I say. After all I am back, again.

Let's talk about the clash of worlds.

Not too long ago I met my supervisor by chance, at my student's house, which was rather weird and awkward because I don't know what else to talk to her about except school stuff. Let's call this student Bling. Recently Bling's mum called me up and asked me to teach her friend's son Music Theory. (Music theory! That-Which-Has-Not-Been-Touched since I was 12). It was then when I realised I have been drawn into a web of networks that is expanding in a strange way in this Korean circle, maybe because they are really into the friends-of-the-friends-of-the-friends thing.

The clash of worlds - in the Korean versus American way.

Bling once commented on her friend (my lecturer's daughter) ShySmile, "She's strange. She's very American". This, from a girl who speaks with an American accent as well. So, there appears to be different degrees of American-ness, that has yet to be explored. This is largely because when Bling and ShySmile get together they speak in Korean, so I haven't been able to figure out in what way ShySmile is more American than Bling.

And then the clash of worlds between the society above and the society below.

My first interviewee brought me into a dark world which feels totally not-Singapore. A world that feels a lot like London Below, in Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. And as exciting as the underbelly of Singapore appears to be, I can't say anymore. Suffice to say I feel like an outsider in this world, newly initiated into the argot, the art of opposition etc.

Christmas again. Too sudden too soon.
